What is a surgical abortion? In a surgical abortion, a suction device is used to remove the embryo or fetus from the uterus through the vagina. This procedure is performed at an abortion clinic and you are sent home the same day. If complications arise, you may need to go to the emergency room to receive treatment. Learn more about surgical abortions... What is a medical abortion (abortion pill)? Although it’s referred to as a pill (singular), the abortion pill actually consists of two pill regimens: mifepristone and misoprostol. First, mifepristone is taken. It cuts the supply of the hormone progesterone to the embryo, which is needed to maintain the pregnancy. Without a steady supply of progesterone, the embryo stops growing and eventually dies. Second, misoprostol is taken 24-48 hours later. This medication makes the uterus cramp and expel the fetus. The abortion pill is FDA-approved only for use up to 10 weeks from your last menstrual period. Taking it later in pregnancy increases the risk of complications. In some cases, emergency medical treatment — such as surgery to manage heavy bleeding or to complete the process if the medication is not fully effective — may be required. After a free pregnancy test and ultrasound exam, we provide an unhurried space where you can ask questions and explore all your pregnancy options. We will never profit from your decision. All of our services are completely free and confidential. Fill out the form to schedule your appointment Here are some recent questions others are asking Do I need an ultrasound before an abortion? Getting an ultrasound before an abortion is recommended because you will need to determine the gestational age of your pregnancy to know what type of abortion you need and verify your pregnancy. An ultrasound can determine if your body is preparing for a miscarriage. What tests are done before an abortion? You should have a pregnancy test as well as STI/STD testing and treatment. What happens during an abortion? This depends on the type of abortion you get. If you get a medical abortion, you will be taking two different medications. One pill stops the pregnancy, and the other pill expels the pregnancy tissue from your body. If you get a surgical abortion, a doctor must insert a speculum to examine your uterus. Your cervix will be stretched open with dilators either before or during the procedure. Next, the doctor will insert a tube through the cervix into the uterus, which is attached to a suction device. This will empty the uterus. Do abortions hurt? Pain and discomfort levels vary from woman to woman. Some women experience the physical side effect of severe cramping, fever, vomiting, chills, etc. Additionally, some of the emotional and psychological side effects don’t always present themselves until much later. How long does the pain last after an abortion? You can expect to experience light to heavy vaginal bleeding accompanied by cramping for about two weeks. However, if you continue to have bleeding and cramping for more than two weeks, you should seek medical attention. What are the side effects of an abortion? • Intense cramping • Bleeding heavier than a period • Dizziness • Diarrhea • Headaches • Mild fever • Hot flashes • Chills More severe side effects, which need medical attention: • An allergic reaction to the medication • Infection • An incomplete abortion • Severe pain • Fever • Passing clots for two or more hours that are equal or larger than the size of a lemon • Strong smelling vaginal discharge • Excessive bleeding, using two or more pads in an hour How much does abortion cost (or what is the average cost of an abortion)? The average cost of an abortion in the US in the first trimester is approximately $500. Second-trimester abortions average $1,500. However, abortion costs tend to be higher in states where abortion is more restricted. Pregnancy Confirmation Your Options + Resources and Support + Make an Appointment Real People, Real Care. After taking a pregnancy test and receiving positive results, your next step at ChloeCare is to schedule a free ultrasound. An ultrasound is a safe and painless procedure that uses sound waves to create an image of the inside of your body, including your uterus and fetus. An ultrasound helps confirm your pregnancy, providing important information that includes gestational age, and determines where the pregnancy is located. Continue scrolling to learn more about why ultrasounds are important and essential to your overall health and wellbeing. Ultrasoundz Schedule an ultrasound Even if you’re uncertain about your next steps of your pregnancy, an ultrasound will provide vital information you need to make an informed, empowered decision. It gives you two key pieces of information about your pregnancy: viability and gestational age. What is a viable pregnancy? A viable pregnancy means that, in the early stages, growth and development are progressing as expected. For many people, this includes detecting an embryo’s heartbeat by ultrasound at around 6 weeks of gestation. Understanding viability is important because a significant number of pregnancies end naturally in miscarriage. An ultrasound also helps confirm that the pregnancy is located inside the uterus. In rare cases, a pregnancy develops outside the uterus — most commonly in a fallopian tube — which is known as an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies require immediate medical care. If an ultrasound shows a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, the pregnancy is not viable, and standard abortion procedures like the abortion pill are no longer part of the medical options moving forward. What is gestational age? Gestational age refers to how far along you are in your pregnancy. This information helps you determine what options and next steps are available to you. Sometimes you can determine how far along you are in pregnancy by using a Pregnancy Calculator , based on your last period, but an ultrasound uses technical measurements of the embryo or fetus to give the most accurate information. No matter where you are in your planned or unplanned pregnancy, you are not alone. Consider receiving a free ultrasound at ChloeCare. If your ultrasound shows that you’re beyond the timeframe for the abortion pill, our compassionate client advocates will walk with you through all of your pregnancy options so you can make the choice that supports your health and your future. Is Adoption for you? Explore all your pregnancy options at Chloe Care! We're here to help you make an informed and empowered decision! Free and Confidential. No Insurance Needed. Your Options. Exploring PARENTING INFORMATION ADOPTION INFORMATION ABORTION INFORMATION What To Know About Adoption. Facing an unexpected pregnancy can feel overwhelming, but you have the right to choose the outcome. One of the options available to you is making an adoption plan. It’s important to know that creating an adoption plan is very different from foster care. As the birth parent, you can choose the level of involvement that feels right for you. This allows you to play an active role in ensuring your child is placed in a safe, loving, and permanent home. There are three types of adoption: open, semi-open, and closed. What is Open Adoption? In an open adoption, the birth parent(s) can continue to communicate with the child and the adoptive family after the adoption is finalized. This communication can include emails, phone calls, photos, or even in-person visits, depending on the level of openness everyone agrees on. What is a Semi-Open Adoption? In a semi-open adoption, the birth mother and adoptive family may exchange pictures, letters, or updates on a set schedule. All communication is handled through the adoption agency, allowing both parties to stay connected while maintaining privacy. What is a Closed Adoption? In a closed adoption, the adoptive family receives only the medical and social history of each birth parent. The birth mother may choose the adoptive family using non-identifying profiles but is not expected to have contact before or after the adoption is finalized. Do I Get to Choose the Adoptive Parents? Yes. As the birth mother, you choose what is most important to you. You can consider factors such as cultural background, values, religion, personality traits, lifestyle, and more. Can a Birth Mother Change Her Mind? In Connecticut, birth mothers have 48 hours to change their minds about the adoption after the child’s birth.
